Camcorders forum: Sony Handycam - Lack of video clarity recording to DVD

Yes, the Handycam is a stand-alone recorder. It's only connector options are standard plug in cables (2 audio, 1 video). I've checked these and they are working fine. My DVD has two connector sites to recieve the Handycam cables. I've tried both, without success.

The Handycam records with no problem. Playback in the unit's video viewer continues to be fine. The sketchy video problem persists when I connect the Handycam directly to the TV as well as the DVD.

I got a canon mv880x from a friend in England. Learned I needed a 4 to 6 pin firewire cable and an ieee 1394 PCI host adapter, so I got Best Buy's Dynex brand, model DX-FC103. Using windows XP with plenty of ram and hard drive space (not sure of the specs, friend's computer, but it ran WoW pretty smooth). Relying on the plug and play feature of the camera and the PCI card has failed; the video has a grid of bright and changing color over it (but you can see exactly what's on the tape through the holes in the grid), and the sound is intermittent chirping, like a cheap starwars droid. The camera works fine and I don't believe it's the cord as it is new. I think I'm having a software problem? I'm dreading that there will be no solution, that the problem will be that the camera is British and I'm American.
