HELP ME. I need camcorder and have idea what I am doing!

Hi - I need a good Camcorder - I am totally confused on what to get. I am a new mom and my husband is in the military. He will be gone for the next year overseas. I want to take footage of our new son to send to him. I do not need anything fancy, I just need something good/dependable that I can take footage of a child.

I need to send the footage to him so that he can play it on his computer. I can't email him footage from the computer. So it has to be on something I can pysically send him to play on a laptop.

I have no clue if you can do that with a mini-DVD camcorder or if they are better than a regular DVD camcorder. I just need something dependable - decently priced (no more than $500) that can take good footage of a baby.

Any suggestions - any help would be greatly appreciated!

Mini DV is NOT DVD

The Mini DV camcorders actually use tape. The DVD Camcorders us a mini DVD that will play in most DVD players. From what I read the Panasonic and the Sony seem to be the best.

Not sure what you can get for under $500 that is getting good reviews. I want to buy three of them for around $400 each to give to my kids as Xmas gifts, but I'm not having much luck finding anything. I really like the Sony DCR-DVD405 or the Panasonic VDR-D300 and you can probably get them for between $500 and $600.

If you have access to a DVD recorder, then it doesn't matter what format camera you buy. Mini DVDs can be expensive. The discs as well as the camera. But if you hook up a cheap 8 mm or any other format to a DVD recorder, you can use cheap standard discs and finalize them. Finalizing allows you to play on any DVD machine or computer. A mini DVD will save 20 minutes in High Quality and one hour in lowest quality. A regular DVD gives you between 2 hours HQ or 6 hours LQ

might I suggest the Panasonic VDR-D200...

Remember to "Finanlize" the disc before sending it.
