I think you know the answer. A camcorder or player is required for you to do this yourself. I'll just avoid stating the obvious hardware required.

There is/was a device that was not a camcorder that played 8mm tapes but was in the 1 to 2 thousand buck range. Are you really that adament about not using a camcorder?

As to other persons and what they do I can't tell you but the cheap exit is the 8mm camcorder.

I heard there was some adapter that goes inside a regular VHS tape.... not true!
Finding a player can also be very hard! To repair a sony camcorder can cost more than the video camera, that are no longer made. Most of those links posted below, just give me a 404 error.
I know they have stores called U edit but I think that can be pricey.

Whatever is on my videos, have been in limbo for the last 35 years. I also have the sony camcoreder that does not work anymore. A friend on Facebook offered to convert one for me, but I have five dozen or so tapes. Some are of me skinny dipping, so I am careful about what I will finally do. Check out a few Pawn shops in your area for a camera that still plays. So far, there is no player currently made any longer. I will keep my eyes open and hope you'll do the same. I did see used super 8mm camcorders on ebay, but how do we know they work? ...and for how long>
