Sony TRV280 handycam not being recognized by PC

I have a Sony handycam and an HP Pavilion PC with Windows XP Entertainment version with SP2. I bought the Pinnacle Studio version 9 software to edit video. So I hooked up the camcorder to the PC with a firewire and turned on the camcorder but the computer did not display the "found new hardware" message. I checked the device manager and the camera came up nowhere. I'm guessing this is a problem with the PC because when I hook the camera up to my laptop, it says "found new hardware". For business reasons, I need to use the PC to edit the video, can't use the laptop. What can I do?

I found WINDV (google.com) to work if it's going to work.

I bought the sony TRV280 2 yrs ago. It works great.
I could transfer into my old Compaq via USB or Firewire. Capture did work with Rexio or ShowBiz2. After Christmas I purchased a NEW HP with MediaCenterEdition 2005. The new HP can not "see" the camera connected... firewire or usb. I loaded the Sony "picture package": no luck; tried to update all software: still no luck. I'm able to use the Camera on an old Win98 setup.. Copied all viedoto it's hard drive, then cut a vcd... took the cd to the HP; edited the video and made a DVD. TO MUCH MONKEY MOTION for ME. Don't know if it is HP, Microsoft opsys, Sony drivers or a combination. ANY HELP AVAILABLE FROM ANY ONE MUCH APPRICIATED!!! ???

Windv and firewire works on all the hardware (hundreds now) that I've tried it on. When it doesn't that points to hardware issues of busted PCs, incorrect motherboard drivers or a damaged OS.

Too bad you didn't tell much about your PC.
