Good enough for PBS, Cheap enough for me.

I was recently asked to come out of retirement as a documentary filmaker and shoot a documentary here in Yucatan Mexico. I haven't been into digital camcorders in a while and I can see that the technology has changed a lot. I am now a graphic designer www.jabustudio.com But back to my question. I want to shoot footage that looks very nice, but I am also funding everything on my own, so I would like to see if anyone can recomend what is about the cheapest camera you can use to capture something that would look good enough to sell to PBS or submit for awards. I'm mainly looking at the AG-DVC30 from Panasonic. If I need to I can upgrade to something else but I just don't want to go over $2,000. Is this possible?
