sony dcr-dvd201 unable to connect via usb to xp pro computer

I just got the sony dcr-dvd201 camcorder. As the instructions said, I did not have the cam connected to the pc, installed the usb driver, restarted the computer, connected the cam, but nothing happens after that. I do not get the usual, "found new hardware" and the process that follows that message.
According to the manual and sony's web site, it also states you dont NEED to install the driver, since xp has a generic driver. I tried that as well, but with no success. I still cant get the camcorder to connect to my laptop, or desktop. (both by the way has XP pro, sp2.
Can anyone, someone out there assist me in getting this camcorder to be recognized on the computer, please!!

I've learned my lesson here. Firewire and maybe WinDV is what I setup all the time now.

I have had the same problem. Tried. XP Home, XP Prof, Win2k, XP Media Centre! This is serious stuff. I have been in the IT industry for 10 years and have been struggling for 3 weeks trying to get my OS to detect my camera. No Luck. Sony tech support was not much help either.

I assume you put the camera into vcr mode after connecting

the cable? Are you sure you've got the cable plugged in to the correct places both on the camera and on the PC? The camera won't register until it's turned on, and it may require play mode.

HAVE YOU INSTALLED THE SOFTWARE???

IF NOT THIS IS WHY YOUR HAVING PROBLEMS.
AS FAR AS I KNOW THIS PROGRAM IS THE THE ONLY ONE
ON THE MARKET THAT WILL READ YOUR CAMERA(PC COMPATIBLE
ONLY) I KNOW A TRICK FOR MAC, BUT IM PRETTY SURE YOU SAID YOU USE XP GOOD LUCK
I HOPE THIS HELPS??
