Camera turns off when LCD viewfinder is opened

Hello, I have almost zero knowledge of technology in general, so I was hoping you guys could help me out.
I have a Canon Powershot G11. It has worked fine.
I turned it on today and it wouldn't stay on. Strangely I turned on the camera with the LCD viewfinder closed and it stayed on.
However, the camera turns off every time I flip open the LCD viewfinder. This would not be to bad, but the problem is I can't access any menus (or nearly any fuction) without the LCD viewfinder open.
The strangest part is, I can take pictures (still with the LCD viewfinder closed) but I can't take video. When I turn the dial to Video and press to record I get 6 beeping sounds, and thats it.
I don't recall doing anything to cause this to happen. But in the end the main issue is the camera turning off when I flip open the LCD viewfinder as well as the camera not recording video, instead just receiving 6 beeps.
The only way I know that the picture taking aspect works, is because I can hook the computer up to the camera to the computer and see the pictures on the computer, because I can't do any playback features etc due to not being able to see anything on the LCD screen viewfinder.
Also I know its not a memory issue as its not full, and I tested another memory card, nor a battery problem, unless both batteries are faulty.
Any info would be great, thanks
