Best Camera under $1000?

Question: What's a good DSLR under $1000 (including kit lens) that is competent in both taking videos (has effective autofocus) and pictures?
I was thinking of getting a Nikon D7000, one of Cnet's grand champions, but after hearing about its incompetence in video autofocusing I was rather disappointed. I saw a video where the camera couldn't keep up its focus with a person slowly walking back and forth and had to readjust every now and then. Is there currently a fix to this? or is there a model that has this problem down?
I am rather new to photography, yet I would like to have a camera that is for intermediate, so that I will have room when I advance in my skills. I was actually considering of getting an NEX-6 for its portability, but then I thought that I should rather get a camera that would last long and that's not as guided as the NEX's so that I can actually study photography and expand my skills with it.
Please recommend me whatever camera that would be around the range of $1000 with competence in video as well as in photos.
I would deeply appreciate your help.
