LCD View Screen DSLR

The question I have is about the LCD view screen in DSLRs. Block diagrams of DSLRs show the mirror and shutter in front of the imaging sensor. Where does the LCD screen get it's picture information since light is not allowed to hit the sensor until the shutter opens and the mirror is out of the way? Is there a second sensor supplying the LCD screen?

You are talking about a DSLR with "live view".

The original DSLRs did not have live view.
It had an optical viewfinder only.
The mirror only had to duck out of the way when the picture is actually taken.
It did have a LCD, but it was for looking at pictures you had taken previously and for looking at the menu.

Live view is more complicated and is still changing.
They keep finding different ways to do the job.

Thanks, really appreciate the web site. I have owned film SLRs but not digital. I have a Canon digital P&S now and am thinking of stepping up. I really like the articulated LCD screen on my camera and I have found a Canon DSLR, EOS60D, that has a live view articulated screen. $1000 just for the body. Quite a jump.

Live View

FYI, a DSLR is intended to be used primarily with the viewfinder. Using the LCD to shoot should be reserved for tripod use and video. Using the LCD to shoot still photos is generally not recommended, primarily because DSLR's perform much slower in Live View, having to rely on a slower contrast detection auto-focusing. The exceptions are the DSLR-like Sony Alpha line of cameras, which use a translucent mirror and phase detection auto-focus for both the electronic viewfinder and Live View.

It has a live view but I found it not very useful. I'm sure someone wants such so it does do as noted by snapshot2.

Most of my shots are taken without ever seeing the LCD. I usually leave the LCD closed and in the way you can't see it.
