Thanks for responding. However, I am still having the issue.
Also, after snapping a pic, when the lines appear accross the screen, the camera also locks up.
Before capturing a picture, everything on the camera works fine---viewing pics from another memory card, navigating through the menu, etc.

Sounds like it is something that you won't be able to fix.
I suggest you call Canon Service and see what it will cost to repair.

From what you are describing, it sounds similar to what others have experienced when the sensor has gone defective. If it is out of warranty, it may be too expensive a repair when the price of a new camera of the same quality is considered. If you are in the U.S.A., Canon does have what is called their Canon Loyalty Program, where an old and/or broken Canon camera can be traded in for an in-stock factory refurbished camera at 20% less than their normal refurbished camera cost. Thanks again to both of you. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I had contacted Canon, and they told me to send it in for them to look at it and also mentioned the loyalty program. I think I will just throw it in the trash instead of giving them more $. I got this camera for my mother a little over a year ago, and this started happening a month after she got it. Unfortunately, she didn't do anything about it (just started using her old camera) until I took it upon myself to look into it for her. And now, of course, it is too late. Ugh! Just venting!

Instead of throwing it out, you may be able to sell it on eBay. People will buy broken cameras to salvage the working parts.You might get $10-20 out of it.

As for another brand, Panasonic's have been rated the most reliable in past surveys.
