Digital cameras forum: Take it or Leave it?

I'm planning on a trip to Ireland, and I figured I should probably have something big and camera-y to take pictures of stuff. So I picked up a Sony F828 - it's all... nifty.

And Big. And Heavy.

And the eternal synching flash. Which is also big and heavy.

So, that eats a bunch of carry-on, and it's a weighty chunk to wangle around, and suddenly I'm feeling not-so-smart.

I have a Canon Powershot A590 and a Samsung ST200 - together they weigh less than the Sony's flash, and take up about half as much space as the flash alone.

So, somebody help; is there a reason to bring the big obsolete fellow, or am I just dragging along something that one or the other little guys would handle as well, if not better? Thanks for any observations you might have!

That camera came out in about 2003/2004.
It sold for about $999, and was the top of the line.
Those were the days before they started cost-reducing digital cameras.
It has a metal body fashioned much like top grade film cameras.

It has a very bright f/2.0-f/2.8 lens and works well in low light.
People can only dream about such a lens now.
I believe that was the last Sony camera that had that wonderful lens.
There was much nashing of teeth and crying by Sony fans when they stopped producing that camera.

The only negative about the camera was it produces some purple fringing in high contrast areas.
But now, that can be removed with software. (Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements).

I would carry the Sony and one of the newer small cameras.
There is no small camera that works as well as the F828 does in low light.

Another opinion: as amazing as the lens on the Sony may be, I'd rather travel light. I'm also willing to sacrifice a bit of image quality as well. So in your shoes, I would just take the Canon. It wouldn't work as well in low light (with no flash), but a small tripod such as a Joby Gorillapod would get around that, as long as slower shutter speed is not a problem.
