A mid-level camera buys you some extra features and controls, some of which the K30 already has (weather sealing, pentaprism viewfinder, two command dials come to mind). They will not give you better image quality.

You should buy whatever best suits your needs right now. If your needs can be met by an entry level camera, that's what you should buy. Reason being, today's mid-level camera will probably be equivalent to an entry level camera in 3-5 years. So if "at some point [you] might just advance to the mid-level/semi-pro camera", you'll probably get a better camera if you buy it at that time than you would if you buy one now.

As for "better camera overall" there's really no such thing. (Actually, there is, but it really doesn't matter.) What matters is which camera best fits your particular needs.

Of the two, the Pentax...

...but the selection of lenses is not as deep as Canon; it's easier and possibly cheaper to find lenses to your liking for the T4i than the K30. That said, very few people need half a dozen or more lenses, and what Pentax offers should satisfy most amateurs.

If video is of interest, the T4i is better than the K30 in that department.

Should be worth spending the xtra$ for the pentax k5 over the k30 for the extra features for someone kind of new on dslr
