Canon T3i Nifty 50 Lens

I just bought a t3i and am considering purchasing a prime lens. I am deciding between the nifty fifty 50mm f1.8 11 or the 50mm. f1.4. What's the benefit of spending 2.5 times as much. My plan is to shoot in ow light and portraits but I am only beginning.

Hope I get this right as the f1.4 gets you more light to the sensor. But as you know, more light is easier than bigger sensors and such.

Get the f/1.8

It's not only cheaper, but easier to use. The only reason to get the f/1.4 is if you want even more control over depth of field. But a very narrow depth of field is a curse for beginners, because when you don't absolutely nail the focus point, your shot is ruined.

I own both lenses, and although I use them on a T4i (and GH2) instead of a T3i, the camera differences won't impact the lens differences, which are:

the 1.4 has much better build quality.
the 1.4 auto-focuses faster and more quietly than the 1.8.
the 1.4 manual focus ring is smoother, longer and tighter, making it easier to use.
the 1.4 manual focus ring is also active at all times. i.e. you can have it in AF mode and manually override the AF.
the 1.4 has 8 aperture blades, whereas the 1.8 has 5 (which gives the 1.4 smoother bokeh).

And obviously, the 1.4 is brighter than the 1.8 - Mark
