Need help purchasing a dslr for a beginner

Hi I am purchasing a camera for my daughter who wants to take photography classes. Since she still lives with us, I thought I would have more buying power and have her share the camera with us. She would be using it as a novice but she will delve into everything you can do with a camera. Me on the other hand, I want to use the camera for my kids sports....soccer, hockey (bad lighting).
These are the two that I am considering (based on availability at Costco):
Nikon 5100 or Pentax K30. At Costco they give you a zoom lens with the Nikon, but no extra lens with the Pentax. They are the same price. Can you tell me which camera would suit both of us.

You really can't make a mistake, regardless of which you choose.

Your daughter taking photography lessons is an excellent idea.
Until she has a few lessons under her belt, just put the camera in "Auto" mode and fire away.
