The Panasonic LX2 was introduced in 2006 as the follow-up to the LX1.

Panasonic continues the same line of cameras: LX3, LX5 & LX7 in 2008, 2010 & 2012.
There has been minor additions with each camera but the camera remains about the same.
All are 10 megapixel, which is good. That is the sweet spot in Megapixels for picture quality.
The lens has gone to a wider angle but maintains about the same zoom levels as yours.
In the LX7, they changed to the CMOS sensors which are faster than the older CCD sensors.
The picture quality has been excellent from the LX2 through LX7.
Video improves each year.

The closest pictures are taken in Macro Mode.
See page 59 of your User Manual.
For pictures of bugs and such, you set the camera for Macro and the bug can be anywhere from 1.64 feet from the camera lens to .16 feet (5cm) from the camera lens.
When using macro mode you will find that a tripod is needed to prevent camera shake.
The 10 second shutter delay feature is helpful to prevent camera shake at the time the shutter is tripped.
And lots of light is helpful for good auto focus.
You will likely be too close for the flash to help much.
If you are wanting some extream close-ups of the eyes of a bug you will need a far more expensive camera and lens set-up.

The field of focus is critical at such close ranges. So the more light you have the bigger the field of focus you can get. A tripod was used for both pictures.
