I lost photos via cut & paste

A quick problem/solution I hope.

I connected my Nikon 'Coolpix' to my Toshiba laptop (Windows 7) in order to download photos.

I selected and CUT my photos in order to PASTE them in my laptops photo gallery.
I became distracted and had also 'copied' a different photo from the camera . I had not pasted the prior pix but i did paste the secondary photo.
When i realized my mistake the damage had been done. I searched but i didnt find them on the Nikon nor the laptop --anywhere. Im surprised that the pix didnt revert back to the camera...what can I do in this case my friends?????? thank you

I tried to understand what you wrote but didn't.

I am not accustom to hearing "cut and Paste" so that may be what is making this difficult for me to understand.
To me, the word "cut" means that you will be deleting the image from the camera.
Then you said you also 'copied' a different photo from the camera.

Are you using a USB cable between the camera and the computer or are you removing the memory card from the camera and putting it in a card reader attached to the computer?
If you are using a USB cable, what software are you using to get the pictures to the computer?
And are we talking about a Windows computer or an Apple computer?
