What is the advantage of higher MP camera for regular user?

Hello folks,
I have fallen behind current breed of compact camera (or digital cameras in whole). I have Canon Powershot A710 and Sony a-300 dSLR with Tamron 18-250 lens.
As DS is growing, handling him with dSLR became difficult and sometimes A710's small zoom is an issue, so was looking at a new breed of cameras. I was surprised that there are 20MP compact cameras!!
Honestly, I am totally clueless why a regular user i.e. the who is not a professional photographer, would need 20MP picture. Sometimes, I find my 10mp picture from dSLR too much. So the question I am asking here is, what these manufacturers are thinking that I am clueless about.
Thanks in advance.
P.S. - Please ignore the issue that even today many people think higher the MPs, better the picture.
