Digital cameras forum: D40 vs D5100 photo quality same lens

I would read up on the metering options of your camera.

Here is a sample of each camera with this lens.

The EXIF shows that the D5100 is set for a darker exposure:

D40

1/125" - F5.6 - ISO 250

D5100

1/200" - F7.1 - ISO 200

It is possible that you have inadvertently set something in one of the cameras.

I suggest you do a factory reset in both cameras.
(That resets the cameras back to factory specifications)

Then do a comparison shot again (from both cameras)
See if they are closer together in brightness.

If that does not solve the problem it can be just the difference between two cameras.
That is why you have an exposure compensator on cameras.
I believe the D5100 exposure compensator can be nudged either way by 5 F-Stops.

If you like the exposure settings from the D40 you should set the exposure compensator on the D5100 to a brighter setting, so that the picture is equal to the D40.

You are recommending a camera that does not exist.
There is no such camera as a Canon D7 (however there is a Canon 7D).

And since a Canon camera can not use a Nikon 55-300mm Nikor lens, it is not a useful suggestion.
