Bob,

I intend to use viewfinder more than LCD. My problem is that when I look through the viewfinder it seems the image I'm seeing is not clear - LCD off ... at least not as clear as what I see through, say a Nikon or Sony. I really think the Canon is a better camera, but I'm afraid I'll be frustrated not being able to determine if things are in focus ... I can not read the signage in the store through the Canon viewfinder, but have no problem with the other cameras. I'm wondering if I know what I'm doing, if the camera's on display are damaged in some way - is this a normal issue with the Canon?

Dioptric Adjustment

The T3i has a dioptric adjustment dial right next to viewfinder for adjusting the clarity of the viewfinder. It may have been out of adjustment for your eyesight.
