Digital cameras forum: How many pictures will fit on a 2GB memory card

My daughter wants to buy a newer camera for me, but I am happy (and familiar) with
my current one. Does either one of you see a need for a change?

..don't fix it. The only reason to get a new camera is if you are unhappy with your current one. But if she wants to buy you one, there's no harm in that.

A new camera will likely have HD video, which is nice.

I don't know why I didn't think of going to Canon's website - my first thought was CNET!
Will stock up on Batteries, but they are easily available should I run short.

The bottom of the Canon site for my camera shows that it sells on amazon for $349.00.
Can that be right? I don't remember paying that much when I bought it years ago.

My daughter didn't mention an improved video, she thinks I need more MPs.

Bear in mind I really like some of the new cameras but my camera is working and I have learned it's quirks to take good enough shots for my needs. Yes I'd like some camera with I.S. but mine has a viewfinder (old school image stabilization) and again it works.

While I would be a little upset to lose that old camera, a new one would be more upsetting.

Plenty of reasons to stick with what you have and my last reason. I know about how many shots I get on a charge. I can plan my trip so I don't need a charge or maybe one given my old camera. With a new camera I have to error on the short side of shots, plan ahead for more batteries, etc.

I do like the IS feature a lot and bought the camera because it had a viewfinder.

just wanted to report back - returned from my trip to the National Parks in September.
I did not buy a new camera and am very glad I did not.
Most people with newer cameras were unhappy about not being able to see an image on their screens
while shooting in bright daylight. Mine has a viewfinder and I used it almost the entire trip to snap photos.
That also allowed me to take around 600+ pictures with one set of batteries and one 2GB memory card.
Nothing to charge or change - it was great!

I did go ahead and for a project pick up a few camera things. Here's the list.

1. Canon PowerShot A1300 which has a viewfinder! 99 bucks on amazon and has surprised me with some better than expected shots.
2. A 4GB Eye-Fi card. Works better than expected. Wish I had tried that years ago.
3. A Canon T3i. Not a top of the line DSLR but for some work (always a fine excuse) we wanted some better snaps.
