Canon Powershot S95 vs Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V

Hey everyone,
I have been interested for several years in photography but it wasn't until a recent trip to the Galapagos that really sparked my passion for the field. I went with a group of friends that all had dSLRs and took extraordinary photos of practically everything. Upon my return I began to think about investing in a great camera to start with before getting into a serious dSLR. I have come to a decision between the Canon Powershot S95 and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V. I am looking for an all around point and shoot camera with the best image quality. I have borrowed point and shoots in the past and have always used it in automatic settings however I would like to learn how to fully take advantage of the potential of a great camera. Would anyone suggest the Sony and Canon as good choices or are there any other cameras that provide greater overall quality? Also, I have always heard of people arguing between whether Nikon or Canon being better cameras but haven't heard much about Sony being a great camera, what does everyone think?
