Digital cameras forum: Recommend a digital camera model for object photos- ebay

If you are wanting to do table-top photography, most small cameras can do a good job of that.

It has more to do with good lighting and a tripod.

A light box is very handy for small items.

Certain camera features are desirable:

Manual Controls let you control the Depth of Field (DOF) by controlling the aperture setting.
This is important when photographing small three-dimensional items.

Spot Focus lets you focus on a place on the object instead just of the object itself.
This also helps with DOF.

A swivel LCD is helpful when you are working at an awkward angle.

You also mentioned that you are interested in portraits.
That brings up the subject of DOF again if you want blurred backgrounds behind the person.

So you need to understand how Depth of Field (DOF) works so that you can control it.

I can't help you with buying on eBay, as I have never done that.

And I use Kodak. They take very clear pictures and are user friendly. My ebay name is vedderbargains you can look at my photos. I recommend the models which have a li-on battery, not AAs. Models I suggest are: Z1275,
M340, M380, M1063, V1253, basically any of the M, Z or V series are good choices, do not buy a C series. When taking pictures for ebay you want to use macro setting and then you can adjust the amount of back lighting as opposed to using bright flash or lights. If you are photographing a shiny object where you have glare, try zooming in so you can move away and the flash won't hit the object so directly, then just experiment with different angles, shoot from above or below when facing the object etc. Hope that helps
