Digital cameras forum: my very first camera, please advise

Just about any camera can do what you want.

If you are photographing small objects, you will use the Macro feature.
All cameras have a Macro mode.

If you are photographing larger objects (say, the size of a chair or couch) you will use the Close Focus setting.
All cameras have close focus.

Before anyone can suggest a camera, we need to know how much money you plan to spend.
And we need to know what size camera you want.
They are shirt pocket size, pants pocket size, jacket pocket size, and too big for any pocket.

You should not buy a no-name camera.
Look at Canon, Casio, Fujifilm, Kodak, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony.

As far as eBay is concerned, and making pictures for posting items there, even the most basic digital camera will do the job. What makes some photos really stand out is the lighting. On eBay you can buy light box kits that make your items look more attractive. You can even make a light box with some cardboard and cloth.

Take a look at the Canon SD1300IS and the Canon A1100IS.

Both are inexpensive and have Image Stabilization.
