M863 with same problem! (fixed)
I have a Kodak M863, with the same exact problem. I tried the solution that said to press the button combinations, didn't work. I bought a new battery, didn't work. Since it was 3 years old now, I was just going to box it up and put it away. But it sat on my desk for a few weeks, and I'd occasionally try it, hoping to have it work. I thought about it, and reasoned that the way it was acting, was almost as if the camera thought that it had something in front of the lens, preventing it from extending fully, which caused it to retract immediately, and shut off. I figured maybe it got bumped while in the open position, thereby throwing the lens off adjustment.
So, I hit the 'on' button, and as the lens extended, I grabbed it near the end, and pulled, pretty hard. Lo and behold, I felt something give slightly in the mechanism, and the lens stayed out, and the camera stayed on!
The camera now functions normally, and takes good pictures again. I can't say that I recommend this method of 'fixing' to anyone, except as literally a method of last resort. Because, obviously, you could break the camera badly if things don't go your way.
Food for thought, if all else seems lost.
