SLR or Compack Camera go SLR if your secious
I dont know if I would be a great choice for this question, I still prefer slides and film over digital. I still dont feel that digital is as good as film but I could be wrong. I did Medical photography In the Navy and a lot for myself during that time. I used a speed graphic and 35mm a lot. The speed graphic if you dont know is the News camera you see a lot in films, the one with the large flash and the bellows between the lens and body and it uses a film plate you put in and take the cover shoot and put the cover back on and take the plate out
I have done some digital lately and would only go with the SLR if you are looking to do birding as you can buy telephoto and zoom lens that will get you much closer than point and shoot will. I like Nikon, Pentax, Canon and Olympus for my choice but there is nothing wrong with Panasonic, Samsung or Sony just my preference. I would suggest that if you go with an SLR you get one in a kit as this will get you a better start and you can add more in the future if you want. You can find these kits on line or at some camera stores. Below is an example from Amazon.com for a Canon Rebel kit And by shopping around you can save money on them. Look for kits like this and you should be able to find a good SLR that you can get in the range you want to spend and have enough verity of equipment to get you off to a good start. Remember this is only an example of one add and what to look for, look around. I chose this one for you to see because it has 2 lens memory card tripod and a carrying case in the kit and not a bad price for all that you get.
Remember shop around and do your homework before you buy now here is the Amazon add.
This is an example of an SLR camera deal you can get at Amazon.com. I think a deal like this is a good deal as it will give you a good start and all the basic verity for good nature pictures or personal pictures. Latter as you get more involved with your photography and if you decide to expand your interest in photography, you can add more equipment as needed. I would recommend getting a kit like this in whatever SLR camera you decide to give you a jumpstart with your photography.

The Canon EOS Rebel XSi Digital Camera incorporates improved auto focus sensor, enhanced 14-bit A/D conversion, an advanced Live View function, and the proprietary DIGIC III image processor, which ensures that the fine details and natural colors of the images are optimally recorded, and manages the camera's efficient energy consumption and high-speed signal processing performance. Its newly designed 12.2 megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor employs large micro-lenses over each pixel to reduce noise and enhance sensitivity up to ISO 1600, while the 14-bit Analog-to-Digital (A/D) conversion process means the Rebel XSi camera records up to 16,384 colors per channel and allows the camera to produce images with finer and more accurate gradations of tones and colors. The camera also incorporates the Highlight Tone Priority and High-ISO Noise Reduction functions (previously found only on Canon's Professional Digital SLRs) and the camera is equipped with Canon's Auto Lighting Optimizer technology, which corrects image brightness and contrast automatically to prevent underexposure with backlit scenes. Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS SLR Lens: Canon's latest optical Image Stabilizer (IS) technology provides up to 4-stop compensation for image blur caused by camera shake and slow shutter speeds. Photographers normally shooting handheld at 1/250 sec can switch on IS to obtain a similarly steady and blur-free result with a shutter speed of just 1/15 second. The inclusion of automatic panning detection makes it easier for photographers to track wildlife and other moving subjects. +PLUS+ Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Telephoto Zoom Lens; An economical DC motor driven AF zoom, with the same optical system, construction, and exterior as its USM sister model. ++PLUS++ 8GB DELUXE ACCESSORY KIT: Loaded with extremely useful accessories.
