Newbie needs help...tripod for travel

Hi.

I am new to forum and am just getting back into photography...after years of just photographing for family. I am about to travel international and was looking for a lightweight tripod. I found Manfrotto 190cx3 and was told to get a ball head. Looking for lightweight, sturdy.

I have a Canon I5IS right now but will upgrade to slr in next few months so want a tripod that will hold heavier camera when I get, but not too expensive as if I lose traveling Id hate to lose large investment....thanks!!

What's the budget. Not wanting to spend a lot of money can vary from person to person. Some would think spending $80 on a tripod is too much.

Manfrotto is distributed by Bogen Imaging.
The Manfrotto 190CX3 looks like a good choice.
It weighs just under 3 pounds (without head).

The ball head should be less bulky for travel.

It is suitable for DSLR cameras too.

I am not familiar with the Canon I5IS camera.
Perhaps you mean S5IS.

Ugh, yes I do mean the S51S...typo.

Do you have a suggestion as to which ball head is best to use as I am new to tripod usage, so need one that is simple to use but sturdy....thanks!

you'll need a carbon or graphite composite tripod, light and comfortable for traveling. However, you must trade off a light tripod with the price. Velbon, Mannfrotto, and Gitzo produced many good tripods, but not cheap. Investing in a tripod is a must, the price of tripod and head are around a regular prime lense. A precaution though, do not keep the carbon or graphite composite tripod in the hot area or compartment, such as car's trunk or outdoor parking car. The heat will damage your tripod.

I've been using Velbon 640 and a ball head for years and served me well for my canon DSLR cameras. Good luck.
