2x teleconverter for canon 40d

Hello.
I have another quick question. i recently purchased a 2x teleconverter (made by Canon) to use with my 40D. Are there any tips or tricks to use with this? I am getting a good zoom when I look through the lens, but my pictures are blurred.

If the lense you are using with the extender is one

of those which will work with it, focus should work in a normal manner. Not all Canon lenses will work with the extender. My 2x works fine with a 70-200 f2.8L IS which is where I use it.

Most likely, the blurring is coming from the person holding the camera.

The longer zoom means the camera must be steadier.
And the teleconverter causes a drop in light which can result in the camera having to select a slower shutter speed.

Put the camera on a tripod and try again.

There are numerous posts on dpreview saying that the 2x teleconverter produces very soft pictures, and the lens have trouble focusing with them on. Most people, from what I've read, will only go as high as the 1.4x converter.

It certainly does not cause 'very soft' images in my photos, and it has no difficulty at all focusing. However, I have only used it so far with the 70-200 f2.8L IS.

You're right kiddpeat, on your lens it does a pretty good job of autofocusing and because your lens is so sharp, it wouldn't do much damage on that front.

Unfortunately, he probably doesn't have a $1600 lens. The Canon 2x converter will only allow autofocus on lenses with a max aperture of 2.8 or faster (2.0, 1.8, etc). Which means for most people with telephoto lens that it will not allow autofocusing. Also, a lesser len's weaknesses show much more with the teleconverter.

you're using the correct shutter speed and ISO. When use any lense with an extender, the focal length will be twice for what you normally shoot. In addition, for most telephoto lenses you'll loose 1-2 F-stops when shooting the same condition picture due to the larger gap between lense and sensor.
