why won't my compact flash card work?

Simple question. I have a old but very functional Canon Powershot G2 digital camera. I have a 32 mb compact flash (CF) memory card in it from years ago, and it takes fine pictures with this card -- just not too many! So I went and bought a new Topram 4 gb CF card. Got it today, fits perfectly in the camera, but when I powered on the camera, the camera sees no memory card at all. Tried taking it out and putting it back in, no difference. Put the old 32 mb card back in and it works fine again, but not the 4 gb card. So I got out my card reader, plugged reader into my Apple MacBook, plugged new 4 gb CF card into card reader. The computer sees no card, either. I tried plugging in the old 32 mb CF card to the card reader, the computer sees it just fine.
Do I just have a defective card that I have to return to the manufacturer, or is there something I'm missing, like having to format the card on a computer and having to do so with a Windows PC rather than a Mac? I made up this far-fetched explanation, but I'm hoping there is a solution that I am overlooking rather than having to send the card back and hope for replacement.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
