Use of digital camera to transfer 35mm slides to digital

I have more than 1000 35mm slides that I want to transfer to digital format.
Many years ago, using my Nikon with the standard 55mm lens, I 'transferred' 5x7s photos to slides. To drop the focal length, I used an extension tube between the camera body and the 55mm lens. It worked out very well. Presently I do not own a digital camera, so rather than buying a scanner, I would like to put the money towards the purchase of a dSLR camera, like the Nikon D80 (D200???).
Is this a reasonable approach?

a pretty good scanner for under $500 with 1600x1600 resolution. I have the D200 and love it. Use it all the time. Not sure how you intend to put the slides on the camera. Doubt it will work as well as a scanner. Good Luck!

Try a digital imaging lab service and get a quote for 1000 slides. Check on the web for the best prices.
Save the rest of the money to purchase the Nikon camera.

Have you ever figured out how long it will take you to scan 1000 slides?
Lots and lots of time. I have a HP scanner that will accept 4 slides per scan. Imagine how long that will take you to scan 250 times? About 40 hrs. non-stop. Add cataloging time and that's another 40 hrs.
