Canon SD630 - USB Device Not Recognized -HP printer conflict

by abcommercial - 2/28/07 7:35 AM

I purchased a new Canon SD630 digital camera yesterday, and immediately had problems with the computer interface. After installing the Canon software CD (full install), I plugged in the Canon SD 630 using the USB cable. Windows XP appeared to properly recognize and install the device, at first, but the Canon software was not properly detecting and interfacing with the camera. After turning the camera OFF/ON again I routinely got a USB Device Not Recognized error. I called Canon tech support this morning (which was very good, by the way, once I found the right number). The tech helped me identify the problem as being a conflict with my HP multi-function printer. By turning OFF my HP printer, and restarting the computer, the camera and computer interfaced as intended and the software worked just fine. Apparently, HP printers bogart the necessary system resources that the camera wants to use. The tech said I would have to repeat these steps anytime I wanted to upload photos, which seems inconvenient. Has anyone had this problem and found an easier solution or hack that would not require turning off the HP and restarting Windows?
