I recently upgraded my HD on my Imac 17' bought in 2007 with a Hitachi 500 GB drive. I did it myself and since then the fan is making much more noise. I did the SMC reset to no avail. Using SMCFanControl, I checked the fan speed and I get these readings:
ODD 999
HD 1400
CPU 4600
Do I need to look inside again, at the CPU to remove some dust. I am not sure what to do next.
Can anybody help me on that one ?

But noisy fans are a sign of a few things. One is that they are wearing out. I figure 2 years on fans in many cases so is this fan 5 years old?

Well, funny enough before I changed the HDD, the fan was behaving nicely. I might have made a mistake while opening the Mac but I am still thinking that the fan overworking is telling me that something is wrong. I check the fan replacement scenario.

As folk are now not so accepting of fan noises, my buddies in the repair shops replace a lot more fans than say a few years ago.
Yes, you could have disturbed something. But you are there and I can't inspect your work so I have to go with the usual age issue about a part that has moving parts. And I'm not there to hear if it's just a fan on high or the sound of an old fan.

you are referring to the noise that a fast running at full bore makes and not that the fan is noisy because of some mechanical imbalance. (Clicking, squeaking, etc.)
Which is it?
If the former, then perhaps a fan sensor has been disconnected. This would cause the fan to believe that there was a problem and to run at full speed.

The former, it starts slowly then it is a constant noise, no clicking. It sounds that I need to have another look inside and determine if I did reconnect properly the fan sensor. Thanks for your help.
Slow start is not a good sign.

Well, I just had to understand better how to use SmcFanControl with the line of code in Terminal after running. It seems that I must have disturbed something in the computer while changing the drive.
