No internet connectivity from router to Mac through ethernet

I have a new iMac I just purchased and in the the process of setting it up I have found that I am not getting connected to the internet going through my wireless router (Cisco). What am I doing wrong?

I have tried rebooting both my router, modem and computer to no avail. Have spent what seems like a lifetime looking for sollutions on the net.....no dice.

Is the imac even compatible with any other wireless routers besides the air port?

Frustrated!

You did not give us a lot to go on here though.

Given that you mentioned wireless router twice, I assume we are looking at you connecting to the router wirelessly as opposed to wired.

Assuming wireless, what sort of setup did you do on the wireless portion of the Cisco router?
Did you even turn on the wireless section of the Cisco router?
Is the Airport on your Mac, turned on?
If yes to the last two questions, can you see the SSID that is being broadcast by the Cisco router?

Wired connection

Sorry I was not specific with how I was trying to connect.

I am trying to connect through an ether net cable. If I connect directly to my modem I'm on the internet, but as soon as I put the wireless router between the two and try to get on via the ethernet cable to my router there is no connection.

If I don't reboot my cable modem, what you noted happens every single time as the cable modem LOCKS ONTO the Apple or PC's address and needs a little help.
