Snow Leopard and Mighty Mouse's Button 3 not working

I use several Macs at home and work that have Snow Leopard loaded and updated to 10.6.1. The problem: I cannot get Button 3 (the scroll ball click) to work on any of them.

All three of the Macs (2 x iMac Intel Core Duo, Mac Pro Quad-Core), all Intel machines, experience this problem. I have done all the usual things: swapped each mouse around the Macs; re-installed Snow Leopard; DiskWarrior, Disk Utilities, cache cleaning, permissions resetting, pram resetting; I have started up in Safe Boot Mode; uninstalled third party early loaders like MenuMeters, and removed all login items. I've created an alternative user profile. In desperation I rang Apple help and having told the consultant what I had already done, his advice was to do an erase and install.

Needless to say, I will not do an erase and install unless it is the last resort and the problem is not a bug in the system. I have ruled out the mouse itself as the problem.

No matter what I've tried I cannot get the MM to use button 3.

Anyone else experiencing this problem? Any ideas?

the one thing that I don't see you doing, or you mentioning, in your exhaustive list of troubleshooting procedures is doing the one thing that might cure the problem.

System Preferences > Mouse and checking that the scroll ball is actually turned on to do something.

Of course, you might just have forgotten to list it.

Mouse troubles

Thanks for your suggestion mrmacfixit. But yes, I have already deleted prefs and plists for mouse prefpane and reset all the mouse, keyboard, expos and spaces settings. I have also tried this with and without all other USB devices connected.
