DVD Player problem. Tray will not open.

Got a problem with my DVD Player.

I inserted a disc to watch it and the light remained yellow (it should turn green when ready).

Computer froze.

Rebooted, the BIOS wanted me to press ESC in order to continue - didn't recognise the player.

Worked fine seconds before and I made no changes.

Tried to eject it - didn't work.

Tried to eject it through the emergency eject hole - tray wouldn't open.

Rebooted again and same problem.

Orange light on computer steady as if trying to read the DVD.

Disconnected the DVD player and writing this now.

What do I do?

Paul:

Take the power off of the drive as well as the data cable and try the old paper clip routine again. I have found that many DVDs will not manually eject while the power is on.

Hook the drive back up again and re-boot, allow the drive to stablize, dont use the mouse for anything but to access "My Computer", right click on the offending drive and try to use eject.

I had to fix two machines this past week with that problem. It seems to be that the DVDs Bios gets garbled or not functioning correctly and interfers with the Explorer program on the machine freezing everything. I flashed one of the drives with a new BIOS that was on the manufacturer's site (TDK). The other drive did not have a newer BIOS.

Why would it make a problem in the first place?

If you find a dead unit, disassemble it to see how it works. Its a great thing to do to some dead unit and will give you insight on how this device works in the mechanical design area.

I can put a computer together quite fast, but from that to understanding the components that I am putting together is a long way.

Way Way long ago in a time that may mimic the "Twilight Zone", computer parts were very very expensive. For instance a floppy disk was a couple hundred dollars and a 5mb hard drive was 3000 dollars. We of the mechanical persuasion were not remiss in letting a device whip us, so we learned the hows and whys as a means of daily computing. It is a habit that is still carried over to the present. We take things apart to see the functionality.
