PC Crash - Blue Memory Dump screen

Help !! I have recently built myself a pc, but am having trouble with spasmodic crashes. Especially while playing games. The parts I used are Asus A7N8X Deluxe M/B, AMD 2800+ Processor, 1GB Mem, GForce4 4200Ti Graphix card, Creative 5.1 sound card (I have disabled on board sound), and all the other usual parts DVD, modem etc. I have installed XP Home and downloaded all the updates yet sometimes the game or application I'm using just stops and sends me back to the desktop, or it completely resets the pc, telling me it had to do a memory dump on a blue screen. Can any kind sole out there give me any tips as to where i went wrong.

I'd call the machine supplier and make it their problem. Ask for a full refund since something is busted. Could I be more blunt on this issue?

These A7Nxx boards are trouble for new and old builders so let the system supplier get the headache.

Have you installed the latest Nvidia motherboard and video card drivers? Is the memory certified to be used in that board? Are you overclocking the processor?

Many thanks Paul,

I have changed some Bios setting and now it don't seem to crash. I would be grateful if you could explain overclocking etc. Like I mentioned I have AMD 2800+ processor. Was running at 166 now at 133 (bios settings). Not sure what these mean !! Was I overclocking ???? Happy new year !! :o)

Actually you are now underclocking the processor to make it stable, a common problem with the AMD processors, many do not get what they pay for because of the instability problems with them.

Your processor is supposed to run at 333Mhz (Intel 2.8Ghz processors run at 400Mhz), which means the bus is set at 166Mhz (times 2 for 333) to get full speed.

The real question is, what is wrong with your system that you have to take a 20% performance hit in order for it to be stable? (It is running at a 2240 equivalent speed now).

This board is basically a support hog. The OEM shop I deal with will not answer any questions or offer support for this board. The issue became so bad I helped craft the words that are added to the bill of sale about these boards. The basic gist is that the unit might or might not work at full speed. And even if it does work at full speed, capacitors and parts will age and in about a year more machines will be showing up at repair shops.

It's a small disaster scene since people who build these often take shortcuts on power supply Watts and system cooling.

Your beef is with the system supplier.
