PC hardware forum: How is a computer manufactured from start to finish?

How is a computer manufactured from start to finish?

I want to know the complete type of journey a computer undergo before you buy it. Something like:
1. Gathering raw materials
2. Rafining/purifying those material
3. Send it so pieces can be made
4. Pieces are shipped so they can be assembled
5. The full operational computer is then sent to be sold in stores

Am I missing something? Or some steps could be merged because they're happening in the same place/factory?

Are we talking about getting a bucket of sand to chip manufacture as well? It's a very interesting process in itself.

Somewhere along the line the OS and application software needs to be added and customized. If the manufacturer is making a whole bunch of exact duplicate computers, they could clone the hard drives, but with some like Dell or HP, users can customize what is shipped, so the software customization with appropriate drivers has to be taken into account. In most cases I'd think there would have to be some kind of quality assurance to make sure there aren't undiscovered defects.
