Canon Scanner - unable to increase dpi above 1200 on 4600 ma

I just bought a Canon CanoScan 5600F scanner. It claims (on the box and elsewhere) 4600dpi is possible. "...at up to 4,800 x 9,600 optical and 19,200 x 19,200 interpolated dpi"

I had a previous scanner that could do 1200, but this is not enough resolution for the project I'm on. However, the new scanner does not seem to allow any setting above 1200dpi in any mode (Advanced, etc).

I cannot find and answers in the manual or online. Thanks for any help you can offer...

It may help to know I'm using the ArcSoft photo studio to scan and import, not the MP Navigator package it came with (that seemed oriented towards novices). I don't care what the output size of the file is. I am scanning only line-art transparencies and want at least 2400 dpi scans.

Sadly, no, that software is the "dummy" version and only allows up to 600dpi. I wonder if there's an overscan method or something to reach these levels? Cannot find any info in the manual or Canon sites...

Some of the specs are, well cagey. That is I didn't see anywhere it told us we could scan a document at higher resolutions. BUT I have see that number kick in on slide and negative scanning. Maybe that's it?

I found out that (using the supplied software) you could MANUALLY type in a number over the suggested options. They show you a drop-down bar with numbers to choose: just pick any one (the highest is 1200), then you can type over that number and change it.

However, it does restrict you when going into the larger resolutions; the scan I was making was about a 1/4 page of b/w but it claimed I needed to reduce the resolution (not what I wanted!) or the output file size, so I chose 50% and it's fine. Another option would be to scan portions and stitch later, but it's not what I need for this project.
