Upgrade help

I'm not sure what I should upgrade on my PC first: my motherboard or my processor(s).

I'm running an AMD Phenom 9600 quad-core 2.3 GHz and my motherboard is... well, I think it's a BIOSTAR N61PB-M2S (PCI-Express).

I was told elsewhere at some point that I'd have to upgrade both my processor and motherboard at the same time for some reason, any thoughts? Furthermore, any relatively non-pricey upgrade suggestions?

Elsewhere I've got three, nearly four gigs of RAM and a Geforce GTX 460, both of which I just recently upgraded to, and I'm still having a lot of trouble running games, I'm wondering what's left keeping it down.

What is your OS?

What version of Windows are you running? If Windows 7 or Vista, look at your performance index (click Start, right-click Computer, and click Properties). 32 or 64 bit version? What do you have for graphics? If you're using integrated graphics, add a discrete video card. If you have a 64 bit OS, add more RAM. If you're running XP or older, consider upgrading to Windows 7.

You have a nice Gpu.
Your mobo has a 4GB ram limit.
Your Cpu is on the low end for gaming.

Guess.....Your machine is rather vintage.
If you try to update this "mobo/cpu/ram" it can turn into a can of worms.

Suggestion.......Get the fastest ram you mobo will support......looks like pc6400.
Shut down all unneeded stuff before playing a game.
Set the game settings one notch lower.

Get your hands on this pgm. PCWizard 2012 and run it. Allow it to tell you exactly what you got and go from there. Understand the true specs of your mtrbd. and then think what it takes to improve on it.

You offer nothing is what your OS is. Allow that to help decide if you want to proceed further, if you have 32bit vs 64bit OS. Next, is gaming is alarge part of PC usage then decide now on the value of getting from the ground-up what it takes to have a stable gaming platform. Otherwise, you'll be playing cztch-up as prolonged play finds the weakest link sooner or later, nothing should be left to cheap or less than capable parts.
