replace old cd rom drive with a dvd-r ( out of a dell pc ) ?

i have an old office used desktop pc ( gateway or Hp ??) with winXP. currently only has cd ROM drive. i've been using an external dvd-r for needs but its lame.. Can i put a cd/dvd -r drive from a dell 3000 deminsion pc into it??
DO i need more than a ( free ) download to make this happen ? please help.

There are IDE and SATA DVDRW drives for under 30ish bucks for desktops. Just determine which it is and put in the new drive. For IDE the only step I do is match the master/slave jumper setting on the new drive.
