New SATA DVD-RW burner but my system is IDE. Buy it?

I need a new DVD-RW burner but can't find an IDE one. They're all SATA.
What can I do? The sales person told me I can't use an adapter for optical drives. Really? Is it so? Can't I just buy an adapter and forget about it ? I don't want to pay for anything more than an adapter.
My old pc is a clone with an Asrock P4i65G mother / Pentium 4 Northwood 2,26Ghz / 2 WD HD / XP SP3
I was almost decided to buy an USB external burner to use with my new
computer (and transfer the files from the old through wire) but I found several reviews of customers complaining about
them. Are the external drives less strong and reliable than internal ones? Do I need to worry about buying one?
My new pc is a HP Touchsmart 320-1020 with Win7 x64.
