PC hardware forum: GeForce GTX 295 dual port. One port failed?

Can one video port fail on a dual port video card, but the other port still works fine?

I have an Alienware Area 51 AX Desktop PC running Windows 7 Ultimate, (retail).

The system has two GeForce GTX 295 graphic cards and each have two DVI video ports.

The system runs two monitors: Primary is a Dell UltraSharp E1800FP 19" monitor and the secondary is a Dell E171FP 19". This 2nd monitor is VGA and I am using a DVI to VGA adapter. Both monitors are LCD.

Earlier today my 2ndary monitor just went black and I have been troubleshooting ever since. I'm fairly sure the monitor has failed and have ordered a new one, I just had this thought hence my question above;

Can one video port fail on a dual port video card, but the other port still works fine?

What I've done so far;

The E171FP has an LED light over its on/off switch. Orange is standby and green is on, working and data received. It shows green when connected and when Display Properties is set up as dual monitor, but the display remains black.

a) Checked all cables, (power and data), are seated firmly.

b) Tried with a new DVI to VGA adapter. I have 3 adapters. When i brought them the first I tried failed so I used another. But the failure there was different with that, no green LED on the monitor.

c) Connected it, (via the adapter), to both ports on my 2nd video card.

d) This 2ndary monitor is also connected to a KVM switch as it is the primary single monitor for an XP machine I have. I have disconnected from the KVM switch and tried all the above again as a direct connection.

e) Connected directly to the VGA port, (no adapter required), to the XP system. No display on Boot, no BIOS POST.

In all cases the LED on the monitor shows green but no display.

Finally, none of the color/contrast/width/height buttons on the monitor work either, even when the LED is green.

Is the monitor dead?
