BIOS SETUP

Hello. I am running an old model IBM-634972G PC. Some times it doesn't strat up the OS normally. So may I know which 'First start up device ' is best for a pc to start the os easily, hard drive, floppy, cd-dvd or network? How is worked different method to boot the os? What does it mean hard disk 1,2,3 to select boot order? How can I know in which hard is saved My windows in? would you please explain? Thanks

If Windows is installed on your hard drive, it's best to select that first boot device. But you have to remember that if you ever want to boot from CD-ROM (to reinstall Windows, to run memtest, to run a Linux Live cd) you'll have to set it to cd first. That's why you often see it's set to CD first, and hard disk second. Booting from diskette is quite uncommon since 20 years or more. It was a perfect way to get boot sector viruses onto your machine before that.
Booting from a network is only seen (sometimes) in company networks.

Windows usually is installed on disk 0, I'd say. But if you don't have that, I'd try 1. If that works, it's OK.

Hello Kees Thank you very much for your reply. Would you mind if I asked one more related to the BIOS that how it is working the different boot devices when the PC is booting?. Ex. I selected the cd-rom as a first boot device, but even if there is no disk on the CD drive the PC boots up easily! How does it work? Thanks

If you select a device, and the BIOS sees it can't be booted from, it's skipped and the BIOS tries the next one in the list.
If none of the whole list are bootable, you get an error message.
