Which GPU?
GeForce GT 430 (Fermi)
GeForce GT 440 (Fermi)
GeForce GT 520 (Fermi)
GeForce 210
GeForce 8400 GS
That's the price range I'm looking at ...
My PC specs:
HP p7xt customizable desktop PC
Intel Core i3-2120 dual-core + hyperthreading [3.3GHz, 3MB cache]
6GB DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM [2 DIMMs, 4GB and 2GB]
1TB 7200 rpm SATA hard drive
300W PSU
And my monitor is 1920 x 1080
Given all that, I would like something that can edit HD video (in 1080p if possible), that's the only heavy lifting my GPU will have to do. Otherwise, I just play 2D games (full screen), surf the internet, listen to music, use regular software apps, etc.
I don't have any need for dual-monitors or high tech gaming.
I'm pretty sure the PSU is fine for everything up to the 520 (Fermi) since HP was trying to sell that to me OEM, but I'm not as sure about the GT 430 and/or 440's ... some manufacturers listed 300W as minimum power supply, but I saw others that said 400W.
So given all this, which would you recommend as low-cost as possible but still accomplish what I'm looking for and meet the specs of my PSU, processor, motherboard, etc.?

I'd look at the 1GB ATI 5450 cards.

This way we don't have to worry about the PSU.
Also, to really nail this down we can't use the Watts rating but would have to measure Amperes and more. Sadly I think most buyers will get upset if we get that technical.
The 8400GS is old, outdated, power hungry and now that we see how long they last, to be avoided.
The 210, 520 should be fine but the 400 series would require me measuring Amperes.

I just called HP to find out more advanced information on the specs,
this is what they tell me:
"if you add a graphics card to your PC your warranty is voided"
Which is why most folk don't tell.

They add in a simple card, inside the specs and what we know won't stress the machine (or the owner!) and then if there is repair or support work, we take out that card.

Use what HP offered as in any video upgrade as a clue to what will work with ease. Don't over-analyze this and it maybe better just to have the PC working then check results "as is". Robert, offers the 5450 as a good video card to what seems to match your needs and overall isn't expensive. Otherwise, you maybe better off replacing the PSU once a high-end video card is installed. Take my word for it, cheap is cheap, so if cost is your over-riding factor beware of the possible result. Also, cooling is very important in a heat stressed system for "everything" if video card is power hungry and demanding.
