sata drive query

I need some hardware help. I had a hp pc that I fried when I attached the power chord. The motherboard was fried. Apparently, the power button was pressed and the pc was on and as soon as I attached the power chord, the pc was history. Anyway, I still have the old sata drive. The drive had Windows XP installed on it and alot of my files are still on it.
I would like to attach the drive to my new pc. However, I am not an expert and I have some questions:
my new pc has an sata adaptor and an extra bay and the motherboard supports hd up to 500GB. I have only an 80GB drive now and the sata is 200GB so I am safe with this topic. However, I had previously tried to install a dvd drive to another computer and now it will not boot so I am afraid to try the drive installation.
does the drive need to be formatted? I was thinking that the pc will detect an os and give me an option to boot either drive. I am confused about the fact that the ide drive has an os at c: and the sata also has an os at c: will this cause a conflict? if I attach the drive to the sata connector and attach the power then reboot, is there something else that I should do?
any help is most appreciated.
