dead motherboard vs dead videocard hints?

Hello--I have built a few computers that used to work great, but have not used in a while since I got my laptop. But they seem to have "died" in the interim, as they are not firing up properly.
It can't be all for the same reason, one only shows a" __" line when I try to boot, the other just beeps at me and I get nothing visually (it at first said no video input so i changed out the video card).
Any tips without changing everything out as to what are the culprits?

Did you try one of those Live CDs from Ubuntu.com?

I use it to boot unbootable machines when I suspect the OS is toast.

You said "have not used in a while" Have you checked the CMOS battery???

...But I ended up giving the stuff away to a local computer repair store. They said just keep my hard drives, but I really prefer to wipe them and recycle them.
