PC hardware forum: compatibility issues

so my gatway is the dx serries.... and im not sure about the power suply... is it hard to change??? and how much??

Can you link to the specifications or the manual of our specific model or have a look yourself? Things we need to know:
- does the motherboard have a PCI-E slot
- what PSU is in it (how many watt)

i dont think i have the manual.... can i find out about the pci slot & psu in control panel???

If your new Gateway came with any discs, the manual should be a file to print out or review on screen. If not, then visit the Gateway support website, find your model# and enter any info they require to check the actual S/N# of your PC to see what's what. Get the manual, download it and save you'll need it sooner or later.

Offhand, if you get the new video card, get a new PSU. That will support the demands of the new video card that will be very important over the long term usage. Having a PSU that very capable with extra wattage than your current PSU and being of a decent name brand helps considerably. Check the manual on the video card and/or visit its support website for details. I suggest you get a new PSU that at least 100W more than current Gateway one. usually, the video card will want X-watts available, so use that as a gauge. if it states, it needs 450W, get a 550W PSU. Cheap is cheap!

The gpu you have chosen is a whopper....power wise....370w.
Your looking at a psu in the 800w area to feed it.
The Gateway DX series seems to be in the value line.
I doubt Gateway has fitted such a large psu to that machine.

Let's assume the card will physically fit in the machine.
Add 150-200 bucks for a psu.

After you have fitted all the parts in the machine......how did you plan on cooling it?
That gpu is going to be like a mini toaster.....serious heat.

I would think there is a label/sticker some where on the machine that says Gateway DX xxxx-xx.
That info might get the members closer.

WOW! $880 bucks for the vid card, not to mention PSU, cooling etc. Might have been better to build a system or go someplace like Alienware. Seems like overkill given the basic spec that was shown, just a thought.

There is more than one machine in the DX series so we need to narrow it down a little.

so the bus for my vieo card is PCI express x16 Gen 2..... does that help us out??

It appears you could supply a little more. However it's a full size machine so with a PCIe x16 Gen 2 slot you are set as far as the slot and the case goes.

Looks like you will have to read the power supply rating to determine it's size.

Gateway shows.

Every 4860 with an "I5" contains a 300w psu.
Verify that by reading the label on the side of the psu.
I doubt it will say something like 700w or 800w.
Which means you will need a psu.

You have the proper type slot for the gpu.
Verify spacing around that slot.
The gpu is a double width card and is about 11 inches long.
Do a little measuring.......will it fit?

ok so lets say the card fits in, and now i need to change the power pack to the computer.... what all do i need and what can you suggest for power packs? also is this somthing i can do/ is it all worth my time, should i just go with a bit lesser card with out changing my power

Only you can answer these questions.

If you go this route it's going to get expensive.
If you've got the bucks......perhaps best to visit your local PC shop and have a chat.

so i live in yellowknife canada.... theres nothing up here, the only pc tech is staples. i didnt know i would have to get a new power source to my pc by getting the card. i do have money thats why i want to buy the card, the thing is i dont want to drop a grand on a card then another grand just to put it in. theres no harm in getting second opinions. isnt that why these forums are here??? to ask questions??? im sorry that a lot of people have jumped in on this forum, i like hearing otheres opinions..... every thing that was typed here is all logical... maybe you just need to get laid.

Just make sure your PSU has the two 6 pin connectors to support the new GPU.
