Swap out hard drive?

I have a 2tb hard drive that I recently put in my desktop as a storage drive. I am considering building a new computer in the near future. Can I take out that drive and use it as a storage drive in the new computer and leave all the data on it? Or would I need to back it up and then reformat? The desktop has vista, and the new one would have 7, if that makes a difference. Thanks!

It works. But imagine if the contents vanished. It does happen (see this forum?) and the only lesson is that we only lose what we don't backup.

Again, works 99.9% of the time. The 0.1% when it doesn't post here or other places looking for ways to get the files back.
