External hard drive but no folders or files show up?

Hi there,
I have an almost full 1TB hard drive, but for some reason I just connected it and there seems to be nothing inside, at least that I can see. No folders, no files, absolutely nothing. Right before I disconnected it beforehand, I did something along the lines of searching or dealing with hidden files as I remember, but that is all I remember. How can I get this data to show up again like it used to?
I MUST NOTE THAT I JUST TRIED 'INDEXING THE DRIVE' FOR FASTER SEARCHING, and as a result I saw all of my files coming up above the moving green bar but like this : 'F:/$RECYCLE.BIN..."
I also must note that I just tried a couple of good programs for undeleting lost files, and a couple of deleted files came up, but it was stuff I have deleted that I actually MEANT to delete and did not want..the rest of the 900gb I am trying to find seems to be 'missing', yet the hard drive space on my external hard drive is still taken up.
