Computer not recognizing attached mouse on power-on

Hi to all,
It happens to me very often that when I turn on the
power on my computer, I receive an error message saying
that "Windows did not recognize a mouse attached to
your computer".
Then, if I unplug the mouse and plug it again and
restart the computer, it does recognize the mouse
and further everything works ok.
After I shut down, on the next power-on the same
happens again.

I use a Packard-bell computer, with WIN98SE.
The mouse is also Packard-bell, with two buttons +
rolling button ( not optical ).
The computer & all the hardware, although "old",
were very, very few time used.

I'd like to know what could be the cause of this
problem and how can it be corrected.
The motherboard was checked and it looks that this is
not a motherboard problem.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Hey iudith,
Try going to the manufacturers website and download the latest driver for the mouse. Alternatively uninstall it and then reinstall it.

Thanks to Sicsac for the quick response.
I'll try to do this, but anyway something is not clear
to me:
1. We tried to attach another mouse to my computer,
without changing any driver installation (they say
the drivers are standard, for any mouse ?!?), and
this other mouse works ok, but I don't like it
because it's an optical mouse and it is small and
reacts slowly.
2. If the problem is really the driver, then how is it
that it however works ok after a plug-out+plug-in+
restart of the computer ?

it sounds like to me the contacts on motherboard/or mouse are coroded try to plug in and out several times to clean them

Pick a USB mouse that you like and use that.

Sounds like you answered your own question, your old mouse is defective. What you originally described would have me immeidately say, "did you try a different mouse" , once you did it appears your problem went away. You need to go find a mouse you like and replace your flaky one.

If that doesn't do it the next step is to get a USB mouse, assuming there is something flaky about the PS/2 port.

A driver really should make no difference at all, mouse drivers don't vary enough to really matter, if they work, they always work unless there is a physical hardware problem.
