PC Longevity,,,,,sleep mode or completly shut down?

I just purchased a new pc "eMachine T6524". My question is....is it safe to press the "sleep" or "stand by" button when im not using the puter? Or is it safer to just to completly shut off the pc when im not using it...I use the pc daily to check email, etc...so which is better for the longevity of the computer...turn it off completly or sleep mode? I have read the manual and its very breif about sleep mode...just tells you that the inner computer shuts down but if you move the mouse or press a button on the keyboard it will "wake up" quickly rather than waiting for a min or so to boot up. I like the sleep button alot but is it good for the pc for the long run? Of course this is a newbie ? so any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
